✍️ Acne is caused by various factors, including the following:
1. Clogged Skin Pores
Skin pores become clogged due to excess sebum production and mixing with dead skin cells. This allows bacteria to grow and cause acne.
2. Hormonal Changes
Hormones, especially androgens (e.g. testosterone), increase the production of oil in the skin. This is a major cause in adolescents, pregnant women, and women with hormonal disorders such as Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS).
3. Bacteria (Propionibacterium acnes)
These bacteria accumulate in clogged pores and cause the swelling and redness of acne.
4. Stress
Stress increases the production of hormones that stimulate the skin to produce more oil, thus triggering acne.
5. Nutrition
Foods high in sugar and simple carbohydrates (e.g. soda, fried foods, high in dairy) can trigger acne in some people.
6. Use of Heavy Cosmetics
Heavy, oily cosmetics can clog pores and increase the likelihood of acne.
7. Exercise and Sweat
Sweating without showering quickly or wearing clothes that prevent the skin from breathing can clog pores and cause acne, especially on the face, chest, and back.
8. Genetics
If your parents had severe acne, there is a high chance that you will too.
How to Prevent and Treat Acne
✔️ Wash your face twice a day with a mild soap.
✔️ Use oil-free (non-comedogenic) products.
✔️ Avoid picking or squeezing pimples.
✔️ If it is severe, seek the advice of a dermatologist.
